Students vs teachers makes PacMan Fighting Covid

Today is the 3rd day of the 3rd week. On this day Rio celebrates São Sebastião. A holiday where public organizations, banks, offices and . . . .schools are closed. Yes that’s right SCHOOLS! Surprisingly we did not know this with as a result only 6 kids showed up. The team adapted the program for today where the students are going to battle against the teachers – in te end everything is a game. The briefing was very simple: create an entertaining game based on a Maze structure and inspired by PacMan.

Today we welcomed two external experts: Marcelo Chaves from Belo Horizonte and Thiago Magalhães from Rio de Janeiro. They work both as game developer for the game development studio AQUIRIS based in Porto Alegre. Today is a special day for them because it is the first time they meet in person. Marcelo Chaves also lives in a Favela in Belo Horizonte called Aglomerado da Serra. Of course I had to capture this very special moment and for the picture only they took of their masks.

It is a rat race to finish the games on time. All disciplines need to come together in pressure cooking speed and heat. The teams asked for 15 minutes extra of time which is nice. Good to see the experienced Unity programmers struggling with Game Maker. That handicap is compensated by the years of experience they have. So lets see what happens in the grand finale.

The result of today was amazing. Two playable games are created by both the teams of students and teachers.

2 playable games in 1 day!
