Play it Forward

Promoting self-reflection in patients with a card game

Play it Forward is a five minute card game that quickly uncovers a patient's life values.

Playing it sparks meaningful conversation about what motivates them in life – an important subject around a major health crisis.

That motivation is the key to the necessary lifestyle changes for rehabilitation.

Life after a major health crisis

A major health crisis can throw a life into disarray and makes it difficult to see a way out, or a life after.

Play it Forward guides its player through the many themes in their life, helping them not just find, but actively give meaning to each choice.

That allows for focus: focus on what truly matters in one's life. And focus guides a way out of crisis, into a meaningful life after.

How does a card game spark dialogue about life values and health behaviors?

Play it Forward uses abstract imagery and asks players to interpret and assign meaning to each chosen image.

Players quickly sense which images they gravitate towards; it's instinctive.

It's asking them what these images represent, that leads to the self-reflection that causes surprising new insights.

Start the game with a different question, and it will yield different choices, a different conversation, every time.

The steps to developing
a reflection & conversation tool

1

Bringing together the team

The workgroup consists of 6-8 participants of the most important stakeholders.

This means the project team, the end users and, potentially, externals such as ethicists and healthcare professionals.

2

Game Ready Workshop

Together with the team of stakeholders, we

  • define our goals and design criteria
  • come up with ideas
  • draft the first prototype

in a day-long creative workshop.

3

Development & testing

A prototype becomes a MVP, shaped by choices made with the whole team.

Development is an iterative process: we build, test and apply our learnings to the next round.

4

Implementation

The finished product is implemented and ready for use.

We provide training to ensure long-term use and enjoyment of the product.
