Increasing awareness of antibiotic use and resistance with a game
Bye Bye Bugs is a mobile game that teaches doctors to use antibiotics more consciously in order to reduce antibiotic resistance among patients.
Playing the game provides insight into the consequences of prescribing antibiotics too freely to patients.
Bye Bye Bugs is a panic game that pressures the player to make quick decisions. However, those quick decisions do have far-reaching consequences, that provide rapid insights into the implications of antibiotic use.

Palpable consequences
Bye Bye Bugs forces quick decision-making, just as it occurs in a GP’s office.
But while the patient subsequently goes home and the doctor doesn’t see the long-term consequences, the game shows them, and makes those consequences palpable.
How does a game change medication prescribing habits among doctors?
A game as an educational tool takes things a step further than reading or video material.
It demands active input and answers with immediate feedback. It makes choices and their consequences tangible. And it teaches how to prevent those consequences, training the making of new, more conscious choices.
With Bye Bye Bugs, junior doctors play through an impactful, educational experience in just nine minutes.

The steps to developing
an awareness game
Bringing together the team
The workgroup consists of 6-8 participants of the most important stakeholders.
This means the project team, the end users and, potentially, externals such as ethicists and healthcare professionals.
Game Ready Workshop
Together with the team of stakeholders, we
- define our goals and design criteria
- come up with ideas
- draft the first prototype
in a day-long creative workshop.
Development & testing
A prototype becomes a MVP, shaped by choices made with the whole team.
Development is an iterative process: we build, test and apply our learnings to the next round.
Implementation
The finished product is implemented and ready for use.
We provide training to ensure long-term use and enjoyment of the product.
